How a Tooth Infection and Antibiotics Wrecked My Gut—And What I’m Doing About It

A couple of months ago, I had a tooth infection that completely threw me off. After a few rounds of antibiotics and tooth removal 👆🏻, my gut health was WRECKED! Bloating. Irregular digestion. Low energy. Brain fog. I felt like my body couldn’t process anything anymore.

Here’s the thing: antibiotics don’t just wipe out the bad bacteria causing the infection—they also destroy the good bacteria that help your body digest food, regulate your immune system, and produce essential nutrients. It’s like wiping out your entire microbial ecosystem in one sweep. Necessary? Maybe. But there are consequences.

So I got serious about restoring my gut. I built a routine focused on repair, not just survival.

One of the most supportive tools in my routine has been GI Restore from Nutridyn. This isn’t just another supplement—it’s a delicious shake, easily digested nutritional drink packed with evidence-based ingredients specifically designed to support digestion and gastrointestinal health. It promotes healthy gut flora balance and nutrient absorption while supporting processes critical to overall GI function. I now take it every morning in water, it’s soothing, simple, and feels like a foundational reset for my gut.

I’ve paired that with Ultrabiotic Complete, also from Nutridyn. It’s a high-potency, multi-strain probiotic that serves as the cornerstone of my gut repair protocol.

I also wanted to finally step into the Coconut Cult craze I kept seeing everywhere. Their probiotic coconut yogurt is next-level—tart, tangy, and ultra-concentrated. In my excitement, I started with a full cup (whoops). I learned that a spoonful or two is really all you need.

So how long does it take to rebuild your gut?

Rebuilding the gut microbiome isn’t overnight work. Research suggests that after antibiotics, it can take several weeks to several months for the gut to recover—depending on the type of antibiotic, the length of treatment, your diet, and your overall health. Some beneficial strains may bounce back quickly, while others take more time and intentional support.

The key is consistency. You may start to feel improvements within a week or two, but full microbiome restoration can take three to six months—and sometimes longer. That’s why I’m treating this like a long game, not a quick fix.

What’s helping me rebuild:

  • Ultrabiotic Complete (Nutridyn) – diverse probiotic support

  • GI Restore (Nutridyn) – gut lining and digestive repair with clinically supported ingredients

  • Coconut Cult Original – ultra-potent probiotic yogurt for a daily boost

  • Fermented foods like sauerkraut

  • More fiber, less sugar

  • Hydration and consistency

  • A lot of patience

If your gut has ever felt off (especially after antibiotics), don’t ignore it. Start small. Pick one thing to support your healing. And know that rebuilding is possible, one day (and spoonful) at a time.
